My Favorite Songs of 2012

19 12 2012

The end of the year is here and as always it’s a time to reflect on the past twelve months. One of my favorite things to look back on is the music. By doing so, I come up with a list of my favorite songs I’ve heard throughout the year. Below, are the top ten songs of 2012, according to ME.

10) Girl Gone Wild – Madonna

Hey, ey, ey, ey this song gets me dancing. The 80’s pop diva returned this year with a collection of hypnotic dance songs, Girl Gone Wild happened to be my favorite. It’s a song that makes you let loose and go…WILD. Whenever I listen to it, a sense of freedom comes over me and I feel on top of the world. Madonna definitely knows how to make a person feel a sense of empowerment.

9) Push and Shove – No Doubt

There no doubting that No Doubt was ready to make their comeback with the ten year wait and Push and Shove proved just that. This song incorporated a reggae sound throughout and when Gwen Stefani belted out the bridge, I found myself on the verge of an orgasm. I’ve been a fan of No Doubt since their Rock Steady album featured songs like Hey Baby and Hella Good. It was great to have them back this year and I just pray that they don’t leave us again.

8) Sweet Nothing – Calvin Harris (feat. Florence Welch)

When I first became aware of Calvin Harris, like most of the world, through his work on We Found Love, I knew he was a talent I should pay attention to. With his own album dropping in 2012, he proved we all should. His newest single with Florence Welch, Sweet Nothing, incorporates the EDM beats we’ve all come to love Calvin Harris for and Florence’s voice is just MAJOR. I could listen to this ALL day.

7) We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – Taylor Swift

Let me just throw this out there on the table to begin with, I have never been a fan of Taylor Swift, or her music. However, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together struck a chord with me. I would become giddy whenever I would hear it on the radio. To be honest, it’s just a fun song, one that I couldn’t let go of.

6) Diamonds – Rihanna

When I first heard Rihanna’s lead single off of her new album, I wasn’t impressed. I was used to the EDM influence in her songs which were all over her album Talk That Talk. Once I started to give the song a listen to more and more, it began to grow on me. Rihanna didn’t need any beats, this song wasn’t meant to dance to. It was a song which she song from the deepest depths of her hearts and I began to find solace in it. Diamonds became the perfect song for me to just chill out to.

5) Starships – Nicki Minaj

I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song. As the lead single to her sophomore album, Starships would serve as the appetizer of what was to come and boy was I excited for dinner. When I first listened to it back in February, it was unlike any song I had ever heard before and boy did it make me want to dance. Nicki was having fun with this song. It wasn’t so deep or directed at someone, like a lot of her songs are. Starships was just one big party and I wanted in!

4) As Long As You Love Me – Justin Bieber

I have never been a Belieber, nor will I be. However, a few of the songs Justin produced in his new album Believe I couldn’t resist, As Long As You Love Me was one of them. It’s a dance hit I just can’t ignore.

3) Where Have You Been – Rihanna

I first gave Where Have You Been a listen to when Talk That Talk was released in November of 2011. It was my favorite song off of the album, aside from We Found Love. I couldn’t wait for it to be released as a single and in the summer of the year it finally was. In case you couldn’t tell already, I LOVE a song that can make me dance on its own. Where Have You Been not only had me dancing, but it also had me singing and jumping. Her music video for this song, made it that much better. I was set on learning the moves to the song. However, I was blessed with such creative talents, but I still dance to it in my own way.

2) Beauty and a Beat – Justin Bieber (feat. Nicki Minaj)

My favorite song from Justin Bieber’s new album is Beauty and a Beat. What first attracted me to this song was that it featured Nicki Minaj. As a Barb, I was interested. After listening to the song one time, I fell in love and I knew it was going to be a hit. I enjoy the beats, I enjoy Justin’s voice and I love the rap Nicki spits, “Buns out…WEINER, but I gotta keep an eye for SELENER.” Never gets old. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

1) Your Body – Christina Aguilera

This song. Oh my god. I haven’t enjoyed a song this much in a while. This is the most underrated song of all time. With a Hot 100 peak of only 34, I’m dumbfounded. Your Body is so electrifying and Christina’s vocals never cease to amaze. This song could put me from a depressed mood, into an extremely exuberant one. Can’t get enough. BEST SONG OF THE YEAR, no doubt.

Hott Singles Now

11 12 2012

There’s a few songs out this month that have really caught my attention and deserve the attention of the rest of the world. They’re all upbeat and inspiring to a degree, which I find to be fitting for this stressful time of year. Whether you’re a college student dealing with the hassles of finals, feeling a bit down with the colder weather, or just need some positive energy in your day, these songs are perfect for you.

Kerli – The Lucky Ones

Kerli, an Estonian artist, made her debut in the music scene in the summer of 2008, with her debut album Love is Dead. I, for one, will never forget watching her music video for Walking on Air that summer. It was creepy, yet cute. Now, four years later Kerli is back with a whole new image and sound. The Lucky Ones incorporates her soothing voice, mixed with some sick EDM beats, sounding much more upbeat than her older music. This song serves as Kerli’s first single to her upcoming album Utopia. If this song is representative of the other songs to be featured on her album, than we are all in for a treat when Utopia drops.

Melanie Amaro – Long Distance

Melanie Amaro is the first winner of the U.S. version of the X Factor and is in the process of releasing her first album. Prior to Long DistanceAmaro released two songs in September of this year. I first caught wind of her single, Long Distance, last week when she performed it live on the second season of the X Factor. I really enjoyed the pureness of her voice, it’s clear that this young woman sings from her heart. Not only a song that has potential to produce tears, it also has an upbeat tempo that is great for the club. Long Distance draws comparisons to songs by Demi Lovato, like Skyscraper and Give Your Heart A Break. Don’t have a Long Distance relationship with this song, give it a listen.

Rita Ora – Radioactive

Okay, can I just say how much a want Rita Ora’s album to be released in the United States already? This girl has huge star potential and I want to be there for her journey. Her latest single, Radioactive, is my favorite song she’s released yet. Her vocals are so strong, comparable to those of Jennifer Hudson. Through each verse she sings, she has a sullen tone, which slowly works its way up to an uptempo vocal belt in the bridge. Not only that, but what would a song be in 2012, without some beats? You can find those in Radioactive as well.

P!nk’s Latest Album is “Just Like A Pill”

18 09 2012

Today P!nk released her sixth studio album, The Truth About Love, and it has addiction written all over it. With the help of collaborators Eminem, Lily Allen, and Nate Ruess (lead vocalist of Fun.), the established singer offers up some of her original sounding songs, a few ballads, and even a No Doubt, ska inspired tune. If you’re looking for some typical P!nk vocals check out True Love (feat. Lily Allen), How Come Your Not HereHere Comes the Weekend (feat. Eminem), and Timebomb. They all are instantly recognizable P!nk hits just like her first single Blow Me (One Last Kiss), which was released back in July. The Get the Party Started singer also shows a softer side with ballads like her latest single TryJust Give Me a Reason (feat. Nate Ruess), Beam Me UpThe Great Escape, and (song title aside) Chaos  and P**s. The title song, The Truth About Love, offers a new sound that deviates from P!nk’s usual work. While listening to the song its hard to distinguish who it’s by. You may find yourself thinking that you’re listening to a No Doubt tune. However, this only adds to P!nk’s credit, that she is an artist who is willing to try different genres of music. As you may recall, P!nk got her start in the music industry as a rapper. So what are the best songs from the album? Aside from her already hugely popular single Blow Me (One Last Kiss), the songs Slut Like You, Walk of Shame, and Try seem to have the greatest potential. Slut Like You and Walk of Shame will have you throwing personal dance parties while Try evokes powerful emotion that may have you crying.
